I play games to relax, feel in control, and for the sense of achievement and fulfillment, not to stress out, frustrate over the score, and be forced to act in haste.
And this amazing game is the best one I have ever played. Not only does it meet my needs for chill, but it also gently scratches each of wonder and excitement as I find new ways to build and finish some complicated constructions.
It’s worth mentioning that it does not need to be some time-consuming monumental build to fill one with awe because even the simplest houses, little cottages and lighted pathways look amazing, always.
The ability to walk or fly through the landscape of one’s own creation in different gorgeous light, day or night settings is a little yet breathtaking journey on its own.
The available options for building may seem limited when you first look at the screen and see just a couple of building blocks and tools. Yet from the get-go, when used in the simplest way, those already allow one to build satisfying creations. However, it’s not the scope of options and tools, but the seemingly limitless ways one can use the game mechanics to combine, stack up, join, and transform all those base parts to achieve new outcomes that makes every hour of the game so unique.
It’s worth mentioning that this process is coded in-game in such an ingenious way that it’s not at all tiring but is seamless, intuitive and, in fact, is the very essence of the game.
The only drawback, if it can be viewed this way, is that the more you play, the more creative ideas come to your head and while arguably most things are in some, sometimes insanely tedious ways achievable, sooner or later you reach the thought, “It would be so awesome if the devs would add this and that!” and this “this and that” really is just unachievable no matter how hard you try.
Even though it’s okay that not everything can be built by placing pre-made blocks and you have to work for it to achieve the desired look and I do think that it’s not the point of the game to be able to furnish every room inside the buildings, as some suggest. I do believe that there are indeed some simple things that I would like to see in the game in the future that I think would not undermine the game’s fundamental concept and would not take away from the beauty of the creative process but would make the experience even better:
• A copy/paste option – I understand the concern that it’s not the point of the game to work on existing blueprints, but sometimes you just need a couple of similar houses to fill the blanks in your landscape or create a part so tedious that recreating it a second or third time is a bit frustrating rather than explorative and relaxing.
• The addition of wooden textures for buildings (currently, there are only stone, brick, and plastered walls). I would love to be able to create more space for my peasants living by the castle. I miss some more common-looking (and simple to build) huts and dream of making a swamp-based city (set in one of the available glades, which seem perfect for that), but brick houses look a bit out of place there, and tiling the whole wall with a single wooden pale side by side with the fence tool is taking ages.
• More fun elements to fill up the water space – like boats, driftwood, etc. – I think the addition of different wooden textures would allow one to make awesome-looking boats, docks, harbors, and piers. That would open a whole new area to explore!
• The ability to place water on higher ground (ideally implementing advanced water physics and adding water flow/current tool and ability to make waterfalls would be just golden! <3).
• More general environmental decorations, not only randomized seeds from doors and windows. Even a simple tool like for water, paths, and flowers that would spawn a random barrel or bench would make the job easier.
• Different types of lighting (torches, garlands, bonfires, etc.) – Light adds so much atmosphere to the builds, and it only makes sense to set the nighttime to see one’s creation in the glow of light-up lanterns – and yet there is only one style of lantern.
• A more flexible and precise breaking tool, allowing you to remove, for example, a single support column or part of the wall without the whole roof disappearing.
I would love to see these come in with the next patches and truly believe that the Devs will continue to develop the game with the same love and talent as they already have.
