Sony Diode Supply Soaked Up By PS3
Reports emerge that low diode yields and strong internal demand from Playstation 3 are pushing other HD-DVD and Blu-ray product launches into next year.
Today, Taiwanese publication DigiTimes Systems is reporting that continued low yields on blue laser diodes is contributing to what may ultimately end up as a de facto 'ceasefire' in the launch of new competing high-def playback devices and PC optical drives until next year.
With four Japanese companies (Sony, Sharp, Sanyo, and Nichia) essentially the sole suppliers of the laser diodes required in the manufacture of HD-DVD and Blu-ray devices, and yields hovering around 30%, Sony has moved to commit nearly the entirety of it's own diode production towards satisfying component demand from Playstation 3. In turn, the remaining three have not been able to keep pace with the rising demand for blue laser devices, in spite of a steadily improving yield picture.
What this ultimately means for the format war is anyone's guess, though it is likely a net positive for Sony and Blu-ray. Not only should Sony be able to gain a significant lead over HD-DVD in player proliferation this holiday season via the Playstation 3, but the indication is that competing options may be fewer and far between, increasing the odds that the message will be 'Blu-ray' at retail this winter.
Do produkcji niebieskich laserów jest potrzebny wyciąg z wątroby pandy, a jak wiemy te są zagrożone wyginięciem. Stąd te problemy ^.^
A na serio to ten niedobór pewnie odbije się mocno na premierze, a przez to i na cenie. W tym czasie pewnie M$ zdąży się wyrobić ze swoim produktem.
Ale blue-ray jest podobno odporniejszy na uszkodzenia fizyczne więc według mnie powinien sobie poradzić z HD-DVD...
I tak zaraz się zacznie że Sony już zaraz ogłasza bankructwo i M$ wygra.
